MLB Rumors: Los Angeles Dodgers Have Growing Interest In Jose Guillen

As all the teams approach the middle of August, there are still teams looking for that final push for the playoffs. The Dodgers are one of these teams; they were buyers at the trade deadline with the acquisition of Ted Lilly and they are five-and-a-half games out of first place.

ESPN’s Enrique Rojas has reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers could be in the hunt for Jose Guillen. Apparently, his role will not be a starter’s role, but he will be splitting time here and there for the Dodgers.

Jose Guillen is available as the Kansas City Royals designated him for assignment last week. There are several teams that have expressed their interest in the power hitter. Guillen could be a valuable asset to a team looking for one more bat with some pop to their lineup.

He has been playing the designated hitter’s role with the Royals. Injuries may be a key reason why he has been slotted in that role. He plays the outfield very well with a string arm. There has been very little criticism about the manner in which he patrols the outfield.

Some teams have backed off Jose Guillen because of some red flags thrown in the air about his clubhouse persona. The Yankees were some of the big players in the Guillen sweepstakes at first before acquiring Austin Kearns. The reason could, in fact, be Guillen’s personality.

Jon Heyman warned that contenders should keep their distance from Guillen, but it looks like the Dodgers are willing to take the risk. After all, they do have Joe Torre at the helm and he has been able to keep Manny Ramirez on the down-low recently.

It is the Dodgers’ call in the end. They could take a risk on a person that is claimed to be worse than Milton Bradley and hope he provides good numbers or wait and see where the Adam Dunn sweepstakes go.

The cards are on the table for Los Angeles.

Jesus Montero Home Run Overshadows Great Performance By Kei Igawa

Yankee fans all around the Yankee Universe were rejoicing and celebrating Jesus Montero’s home run for Scranton Wilkes-Barre that won the game for the team in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Yankee fans on Twitter were calling for the call-up of Montero on September 1st with tweets including #JesusIsComing. But the Yankees have another player that could have more of a shot of being called up than Montero and he’s been in the major leagues before.

Kei Igawa was looking like an ace in his Triple-A start in place of Tim Redding who has left the Yankees for a Korean baseball team. Igawa was scoreless through 5.2 innings and was in control at all times.

In fact, out of all of Igawa’s pitches only 15 were balls. The rest were strikes. He struck-out seven and only allowed six hits.

A few years back, the Yankees signed Igawa to be their response to the Daisuke Matsuzaka signing in Boston. Neither one of these signings was all that great, but the Yankees looked like the biggest losers in the end. Igawa was a failure in the major leagues, but he does have one great memory with a win against the Red Sox.

When all is said and done, Igawa may have been one of the stronger pitchers in Japan. Then he became one of the weakest in New York, but a minor star in Scranton.

This could be Igawa’s start to a return to the majors and he could come as a surprise. The popular prediction is that Igawa is just catching fire, but in the majors this may only be equivalent to a spark.

The Yankees could call him up on September 1st to possibly let him make a final few appearances in pinstripes. The Yankees will probably look to get rid of him somehow, but he’s signed with the team until 2012. He is arbitration eligible after the 2011 season. There are probably only a few fans that will miss Igawa, and by few I mean a handful.

Final Note: Igawa was able to get Carlos Delgado out in the Scranton win. Delgado is considered by many to be a Canadian baseball great, but he’s past his prime. Nothing really to cheer about, just a note on another former big leaguer trying to make a come-back.

Derek Jeter Surpasses The Bambino On All-Time Hits List

The records keep on piling up for Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees. He entered the Yankees-Red Sox game on Sunday night tied with The Great Bambino, Babe Ruth, on the all-time career hits list. It came against a very familiar foe in the Boston Red Sox with Josh Beckett on the mound.

In the second inning, Derek Jeter walked up to the plate with great swagger like always. It seemed like there was no pressure on him, as he just lined a base hit up the middle of the field to simply surpass Babe Ruth. Not only did he add himself to a greater place in the record books, but he helped the Yankees get out in front.

On Jeter’s second inning hit, Brett Gardner was able to score and the Yankees increased their lead on Boston to 2-0.

Down goes Lou Gehrig and down goes Babe Ruth! Derek Jeter is now within 126 hits of 3,000. It’s not like he needs that to get into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, because with five World Series Championships and more than 2,500 hits, you are a lock in anyone’s book.

Bombers’ Banter predicts that Derek Jeter will pass that milestone in 2011 as a New York Yankee. He will not sign elsewhere and will accomplish that feat in his familiar pinstriped uniform.

Congratulations, Derek Jeter!

Not a Bum for Acting: Reviewing Derek Jeter’s Cameo in “The Other Guys”

“The Other Guys” opened in theaters this past Friday starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. But the comedy film starred a very popular New York figure in Derek Jeter.

The Yankees shortstop has been on Saturday Night Live and is engaged to actress Minka Kelly, so the acting potential is all around him. There was a lot of hype building up to his acting debut in a blockbuster, but he failed to disappoint.

Derek Jeter has won MVP awards for Major League Baseball’s World Series and All-Star Game, respectively. With his role as himself and as a bum, Jeter could add an Oscar to his set of awards.

In the film, Mark Wahlberg’s cop character is called “The Yankee Clipper”, because of an incident where he shoots Derek Jeter in the dugout steps before a World Series game. Derek Jeter is on the ground and fans believe that Wahlberg caused them a championship.

Jeter’s funnier scene occurs years later when Wahlberg and Jeter meet at Nathan’s in Coney Island. Jeter is dressed as a bum and is on the streets due to the shooting that occurred years prior. When Derek Jeter is dressed as a bum, the audience bursts into tears of laughter as now there is a comedic Jeter on the screen alongside a hilarious Will Ferrell.

MTV recently revealed that Adam McKay, one of the film’s leading producers, was surprised with how prepared Jeter was for his role. The filming occurred not too long after the World Series and many believed that the Yankee Captain would be partying it up, but instead he was ready for his next job with his lines prepared.

“The Other Guys” has the audience in tears even before the Derek Jeter scenes. It is a hilarious movie that draws just about the same praise and comedy glory of Will Ferrell’s “Step Brothers.”

It is definitely a must-see flick this summer and New York fans will gladly enjoy the acting of their very own Derek Jeter.

MLB Trade Deadline: Yankees Acquire Kerry Wood, Pass On Octavio Dotel

The Yankees made it one of their priorities to add a reliever to the team at the trade deadline. Octavio Dotel of the Pirates has been on fire this season. There was speculation that the Yankees may have been in on Dotel earlier in the season but that has all fallen apart.

The Yankees considered him a bad addition to the clubhouse, when he was with the team in 2006. The Yankees have a great atmosphere in the clubhouse with people like Burnett and Swisher. Bringing in a grumpy player like Dotel will only make things worse. It only takes one bad apple to spoil a bunch and the Yankees do not want that.

Originally, the Yankees’ No. 1 option was Joakim Soria of the Kansas City Royals, but he is reportedly not available. The Royals will be holding onto him and hope to try and get rid of a former Yankee reliever, Kyle Farnsworth.

The latest news is that the Yankees are on the verge of obtaining their reliever. This time, it will be former Cubs standout and Indians closer Kerry Wood. Buster Onley has tweeted that Kerry Wood could soon be joining the Yankees.

This rumor was also confirmed by the New York Post’s Joel Sherman. He believes that this will definitely provide a safety net for Joba Chamberlain. Likewise is believed by other Major League Baseball scouts.

Kevin Davidoff has assured that Kerry Wood will be a Yankee. He also notes that this is the end of the Yankees Trade Deadline shopping.

Update: The Indians will cover a significant portion of Wood’s deal according to Joel Sherman.

Welcome to The Bronx: Yankees Pick Up Lance Berkman From The Astros

The 2010 MB Trade Deadline has arrived, and all signs were pointing that no really big move was going to be made ever since the Cliff Lee trade fell through. But Brian Cashman and the Yankees front office made a move that would have the Boss proud.

The Yankees completed their deal with the Houston Astros for Lance Berkman. Mark Melancon and Jimmy Paredes were the Yankee chips moved to Houston in the Trade Deadline move.

But that was not the only move that the New York Yankees made this weekend. Late Friday night, a deal was made with the Cleveland Indians that sent Austin Kearns on the next flight to Tampa to join the Yankees. The player involved on the Yankees side of the Kearns deal has not been announced just yet.

The newest Yankees will definitely provide a spark to an already potent Yankees offense. Berkman will serve as the Yankees designated hitter, while Kearns will provide some pop off the bench.

The 34-year old Yankees designated hitter did not play against the Brewers last night with the Astros, as the final touches were being put on the deal.

Kearns was pulled from the game in Cleveland.

The final touch was for Lance Berkman to waive his no trade-clause to join the Yankees. In fact he did, and now, he’s making the move from Texas to the Big Apple.

The Yankees successfully were able to make a big deal without losing top prospects like Jesus Montero or Austin Romine in the process. Melancon was a prospect that many were ready to say good bye to after he had a minor flop on the big stage.

Yankees like Mark Teixeira and manager Joe Girardi expressed how excited they were to have these two great players join them in New York.

Berkman will be with the team in 2010 and has an option for 2011. The Yankees will definitely take advantage of the valuable time he is with the team, especially since the Astros will be picking up some of the money involved.

On behalf of the Bleacher Report community and Yankee fans around the world, “Welcome to the Bronx, Lance and Austin!”

UPDATE: Lance Berkman will wear No. 17 for the New York Yankees. Kearns will wear No. 26. Get Your Berkman jerseys while they are hot!

Yankees’ Jon Weber Retires After Never Playing In The Majors

More sad news arrives for the New York Yankees as fans will never be able to see Jon Weber don the Yankee pinstripes at Yankee Stadium. This comes after the sad news of the passing of George Steinbrenner and Bob Sheppard.

Weber was at the center of the Yankee Spring Training story-lines as fans were hoping this man’s journey have a happy ending. He was arrived to the Yankees camp at 5’10”, 190 pounds, and with hopes as high as Mount Everest. He donned the No. 79 for the Yankees, but his odds of even making the team on Opening Day were higher than that.

At one point during Spring Training, fans were cheering this old rookie on as he was leading the team in batting average. Fantasy baseball freaks were still not excited at all by these numbers, because what it came down to was that Weber was a journeyman in the minor leagues.

He spent 11 years in the minor leagues with teams from the Toledo Mudhens to the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees.  This Yankee stint could have put the final touches on his career and finally found him a home in the major leagues.

That unfortunately will not come to be as Jon Weber has decided to walk off into the sunset and call it quits. Weber played for the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees for the first two months of the season and has since come to the decision of retirement. This is the latest according to the SWB Yankees Blog and Donnie Collins on Twitter.

Sad to say, Bleacher Creatures and Modell’s will not be stocking high on their “Weber 79” jerseys.

Bleacher Report and the New York Yankee fans wish Weber the best of luck on his future endeavors.
