Chad Jennings of the Journal News is reporting that the Yankees have designated outfielder Randy Winn for assignment to make room on the roster for Curtis Granderson who is returning from a groin injury.
“I was ready. I was prepared. … I played terrible,” Winn said after hearing he’d been cut. “That’s the bottom line.”
The Yankees signed Winn to a one-year $1.1 million contract to be an outfielder off the bench. His contract included performance bonus that could have escalated the deal to $2 million, but he didn’t reach any of them. He played in 29 games for the Yankees. He went 13-for-61, .213, and had a .300 OBP, .295 SLG, .595 OPS, and 66 OPS+.
The Yankees now have 10 days to trade or release Winn. If they don’t find somebody who wants him via trade the Yankees are on the hook for his entire $1.1 million salary. If a team eventually picks him up the Yankees would only be off the hook for the pro-rated major league minimum portion of his contract.
