Major League Baseball expanded its use of instant replay for the 2014 season, and that element of America’s pastime fostered an unforgettable walk-off end to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.

Pirates left fielder Starling Marte stepped to the dish with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and smashed a Tim Hudson pitch into the right-field wall at PNC Park.

Hunter Pence fielded the ball as Marte cruised toward third base, then an errant relay throw from second baseman Ehire Adrianza allowed Marte a chance to go home for the winning run.

It appeared as though Marte was tagged out as he dove in, but upon further review, he was ruled safe. It looks as though the instant replay policy worked wonders in this particular instance.
