Adams Hurts Quad

Tuesday, May 26

The Cardinals are currently categorizing Adams’ injury as a quad strain. He came up limping when rounding first on a fifth-inning double, and he was replaced by Mark Reynolds, who pinch ran and took over at first base.

Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com reported that Mike Matheny has “a high level of concern” and to expect a player move.

In his third full MLB season, Adams is off to a rocky start. He’s hitting .241/.280/.369 with four home runs and 20 RBI, putting him on pace to set career lows in nearly every category. The lumbering first baseman had, however, seemingly been breaking out of his slump. Tuesday’s double was his third extra-base hit in as many days.

The Cardinals will likely pluck Reynolds off the bench if Adams is forced to miss extended time. The veteran has played all over the field this season, most notably at both corner infield spots and the outfield. With National League-rules series coming up for almost the entire next month, Adams will not have any opportunities to really rest his legs as a designated hitter.

Given his struggles, though, a little head-clearing break might wind up paying long-term dividends.
