I’ve had the pleasure of attending games in nine different minor league parks this season, throughout Indiana and Illinois, and I’m finding more and more that I walk away from the minor league experience a much happier man.
Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing a game at Wrigley Field , PNC Park , or the new Target Field . I even like seeing games indoors at the Trop .
But I think the greatness of those experiences is more about the caliber of the player than it is the caliber of the venue.
The fact that I can go to a game and see the guys on my fantasy team, or guys who I have watched for a decade or more, can only come with a trip to a Major League park.
However, after a game in the smaller minor league park, I leave with sort of a zen sense of calm. It’s that baseball calm of the cadence of the smack of the catcher’s leather or wood bat on red and white spheroid that transforms me into someone happy to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
A maybe that’s just what’s about: Simplicity.
Isn’t that what baseball is all about?
