The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking up at Milwaukee in the standings in the early going in the National League Central, but they had much more pressing concerns during their game against the Brewers Friday.

The team’s official Twitter page alerted fans to the developments regarding superstar Andrew McCutchen:

McCutchen was 0-for-3 on the day before leaving the game, and he has struggled in the season’s opening stretch. He is hitting below .200 in the middle of the Pirates’ lineup, although we are talking about far too small of a sample size to be concerned.

If the 2013 National League Most Valuable Player has to miss an extended amount of time, though, it would be worth getting concerned over.

McCutchen is the centerpiece of the Pittsburgh offensive attack, but he is also a stellar defender in center field. The Pirates, who are looking to return to the playoffs after an incredible run during the 2013 season, certainly need a healthy McCutchen if they hope to make noise again.
