The Staten Island Yankees have not yet released a 2010 roster mostly because many of the players that will end up on that team have not been drafted yet.

That doesn’t mean that we can’t take an educated guess as to whom is going to be on the team and Robert Pimpsner of Baseball Digest, entering his 8th season on the beat, has done just that.

Here is Pimpsner’s roster preview:

Pitchers
Matt Richardson
Manny Barreda
Michael O’Brien
Nik Turley
Mariel Checo
Brian Gerritse
Francisco Daniel Gil
Wilton Rodriguez
Samuel Elam

Catchers
JR Murphy
Jhorge Liccien

Infielders
Garrison Lassiter
Emerson Landoni
Jose Toussen
Jose Mojica

Outfielders
Eduardo Sosa
Kelvin DeLeon
Ramon Flores
Slade Heathcott
Judd Golson

That is a pretty good guess from what I can tell. This won’t be the roster though. Like I said, a lot of players that are going to make up that team haven’t even been drafted yet and a few will stay in the Gulf Coast League down in Florida.

Last year’s first round draft pick Slade Heathcott is obviously the best prospect on the team with JR Murphy and Kelvin DeLeon right behind him. I don’t know much about pitchers except some of them are the high risk/reward types who have yet to breakout in the organization.

I actually got a chance to see Mariel Checo pitch while I was covering the PSAL Championships for the NY Daily News last year. He was impressive, but very raw and his velocity was down a bit that day. I can’t wait to see him now that he’s been in the organization for the last year. He’s supposed to have a live arm and he’s a local product. Who doesn’t like rooting for local kids?
