In case you all didn’t know, Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay just threw a no-hitter in his first postseason start against the Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS. Earlier in the season, Doc threw a perfect game against the Florida Marlins.
In the days leading up to the MLB postseason, many “experts” questioned Halladay’s ability to handle the postseason pressure. I think they were all silenced this evening. By being this dominant against the National League’s No. 1 offense, Roy Halladay has pretty much sealed the deal (in my eyes) for the Philadelphia Phillies.
He had complete control on all his pitches tonight and was flawless. A walk issued to Jay Bruce was the only thing that kept Halladay from a perfect game. Up next on the mound for the Phillies? Roy Oswalt. Oswalt has a lifetime 3.66 ERA in the postseason.
Don Larsen was the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the postseason. Halladay is the second pitcher to throw a no-hitter or better twice in a season. Who was the first? Nolan Ryan. Doc is the first pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter or better in both the regular season and the playoffs.
