MLB Offseason Report Cards: Grading the 6 Biggest Deals

Now that the proverbial dust is settling, it’s time for my favorite part of the MLB offseason—judging people!

I’m handing out grades to every party involved in this winter’s biggest deals and doing it with the hypercritical sensibility of a school teacher who scribbles condescending notes in the margins of a math test (“Now you see the value of practice problems…”).

I love it. It makes me feel big. I’m a guy behind a keyboard yelling at important suits. What fun.

Now, the baseball general managers implicated in this video deserve credit for their chutzpah—a willingness to pull the trigger when others stood idly by.

That, however, does not shield the brave few from my punitive gaze. Your actions are public record now, gentleman, and I will praise, dissect and deride them as such.

There’s no going back from the choices you’ve made and no hiding from their fallout.

MLB Free Agents 2012: Top 7 Hitters on the Market

Free agency: the time where players and teams find each other.

The winter meetings have already found Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes a home. As more teams obtain their offensive upgrades throughout the meetings, the talent pool of free agents decreases. Just Thursday both Josh Willingham and Michael Cuddyer were signed.

While many of the well-known names have already committed to their 2012 teams, there are still some good bats available.

When most think of the hitters available, they think of Prince Fielder, but there are others just waiting for a team to pick them up.

Teams are always looking to bolster their lineup and will continue to do so throughout the offseason. For now, these are the best remaining free-agent hitters on the market.

One thing is clear; these moves will have a tremendous impact on the rest of the market. With that in mind, we delve into the best stories that are left in the hot stove.

You can bet that means there will be an update on Prince Fielder. No rumor mill would be complete without a rundown on the best hitter left in the market. We shall see soon who plans on overpaying for his services.

Here is a rundown on the trades and free-agent moves that you might expect as we head into the last week before Christmas. It’s going to get quite interesting.

There is just one thing that was on each of our minds this week: We didn’t see that one coming. We were all flabbergasted as two studs just made power sway greatly to the west.

MLB Hot Stove: Latest Trade and Free-Agent Rumors from Around the League

The hot stove is not just heating up, it’s fully engulfed in flames. Here are the latest and greatest rumors floating around concerning major league baseball superstars.

As always, there are the haves and the have-nots. For years we have seen the Red Sox and Yankees continue to spend at a record pace.

Finally, the Marlins are looking to make a cannonball of a splash. They are targeting just about every single big name in the market, and they are hungry for more.

Here are the latest rumors floating around prior to the all-important winter meetings. Many of these deals will be consummated soon. So sit back and watch what very well could unfold shortly.

If all goes as planned, Miami will have themselves quite the ball club next year.  I would be annoyed, but at least it’s not the usual suspects picking up all the fine talent this time around.

MLB: 5 Under the Radar Free Agents Who Will Explode

Many who think of free agents think of the same few big-name guys. Players like Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols, CJ Wilson and Carlos Beltran are all targets of multiple teams and will get huge contracts this offseason.

Unfortunately, there is a huge amount of teams hoping to add a big name to their roster next year. They will have to look elsewhere in free agency to complete their team.

There are several other talented options that have not received as much attention. Whether it is because of a down year or the environment they played in, these players may not have the statistics showing their potential for 2012.

Some players may be able to make a huge impact on a team at a major discount. These are the guys who do not have all the attention, but with the right team will have a major chance to absolutely explode next season.
