This offseason has proven to a busy one for the Rockies as they attempt to retool for the 2012 campaign.
The Rockies have pulled off yet another trade to bolster the lineup. They traded pitcher Clayton Mortensen to Boston in exchange for shortstop Marco Scutaro.
Colorado has now filled their hole at second base as that is where Scutaro will be asked to play this season. He will most likely be hitting second in the lineup as well sandwiched between Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez.
Last season saw Scutaro hit .299 with 54 RBI.
Primarily a shortstop, Scutaro has played second base in his career, and in the 324 games played there, he has a .992 fielding percentage.
This is a more than capable middle infielder and in my opinion an extremely good acquisition on the part of the Rockies.
Colorado did not have to give up all that much in this trade as Mortensen was just another piece in an already crowded rotation.
Chances are that Mortensen would have been in the bullpen or starting in Triple-A Colorado Springs to start the season.
Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd has addressed the starting rotation this offseason through various trades, and has now filled seemingly the only hole left, being second base.
Colorado now has a very deep lineup and is looking quite strong heading into 2012.
