Nobody likes hockey anymore.
It makes me sad, but in the past few years it has been my feeling that people just don’t like hockey as much as they used to. Maybe that comes from growing up in New York and people here have just become apathetic lately as opposed to how excited people were in the ’90s with the Cup, Mark Messier, and Wayne Gretzky all being here.
Anyway, the reason I mention it is because Rangers captain Chris Drury was at the Yankees game earlier in the week while they were playing the Philadelphia Phillies. The cameras showed him with his family for a brief time and Michael Kay and the rest of the announcers just ignored him. When he came up on screen they didn’t even flinch and eventually broke away to do that evening’s trivia question.
This is sad because I can’t imagine that this would happen for any basketball, football, golf, or right now, any soccer player either (alright, I’m sure a few golfers might not get noticed). But Drury isn’t just any Ranger, he’s the Ranger captain and it seems that just doesn’t carry much weight these days.
