Donald Trump hasn’t been afraid to ruffle some feathers during his quest for the Republican presidential candidate nomination, but Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts fired back Wednesday.
In a tweet sent out Monday, the former star of The Apprentice took issue with the notion that Ricketts and his family have spent against his bid for the White House:
Ricketts stood behind his family’s endeavors and questioned the ominous portion of Trump’s tweet that suggested they had something to hide, according to Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago:
It’s a little surreal when Donald Trump threatens your mom. The fact is whether it’s my mom or my dad on his Ending Spending stuff or my sister on marriage equality issues or my brothers and what they do or what we do with the team, we are pretty much are an open book. We stand up for what we believe in. We support the causes we think are important. That is what America should be. That is who we are. … If we had something to hide, you people would have found it by now. I have no idea (what Trump was warning of).
Per Levine, the Ricketts have been up front about their spending against Trump, as Tom Ricketts’ mother, Marlene, contributed $3 million to the Our Principles political action committee.
The family also contributed to anti-Trump ads in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Trump is as divisive as any presidential candidate in recent memory—as the Ricketts’ efforts can attest to—and he hasn’t hesitated to speak his mind about any number of matters.
