Five members of the San Francisco Giants organization, all minor league prospects, were injured in a two-vehicle car accident Tuesday morning in Arizona. At least four people were hospitalized as a result of the wreck.

Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area noted there are currently conflicting reports about the extent of the players’ injuries. A Scottsdale battalion chief told the Associated Press one person suffered critical injuries, but whether that’s referring to members of the team is unclear:

But the understanding was different as bits and pieces of news filtered among players and coaches at the Giants’ minor league facility. Derin McMains, a minor league coach, said to his understanding none of the injured were seriously hurt. Giants vice president Staci Slaughter said she had the same understanding, but details were sketchy. Slaughter said the club would have more information later in the day.

Braggerly later provided more details about the incident:

The Mercury News’ Alex Pavlovic names the players involved in the accident:

Rick Davis of Fox 10 in Phoenix passed along a picture of the scene and reported it was not a life-threatening accident:

The players were riding in a 12-passenger van when it was hit by a Kia Sedan. Names of the players involved in the accident, those who were injured and their statuses have not been released by the team at this time.

McMains was quoted as saying, “We met with the guys who are here and you can imagine everyone is pretty shaken up. You try to figure out how some good can come of this. You see how quickly everything can be taken from you.”

The CSN Bay Area report states the Giants are currently holding a camp in Arizona for prospects not on the 40-man roster, which often includes young players still in the early stages of their minor league development.

It’s a conditioning camp for that group and was scheduled to last three weeks. Whether today’s incident will have any impact on it other than getting off to a scary start is unclear. Farm director Shane Turner is in charge of running the camp, according to the report.

The Giants are hoping the word that team officials have been getting about there being no serious injuries is accurate. Per the report, players who didn’t need further medical attention are in the process of going through “Impact concussion tests” as a precaution.

No further information about the crash was made immediately available.
