According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post , the Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Tim Redding to a minor league contract.

Redding was released by the Rockies earlier this week. He was pitching for their Triple-A affiliate this season. In five games he had a 1-1 record with a 4.32 ERA in 25 innings. He last pitched in the majors for the New York Mets last season. In 30 games and 17 starts for the Mets he had a 3-6 record and a 5.10 ERA in 120 innings.

Redding actually pitched one game for the Yankees back in 2005. It was an emergency start in Fenway against the Red Sox. He pitched poorly, allowed six runs in one inning, and was released after the game.

Don’t worry about this signing hurting the Yankees, as it is purely a move for minor league depth. Ivan Nova was called up last week and it is likely the Yankees signed Redding to take his spot in the Triple-A Scranton rotation for a little while. It’s possible he might have had better opportunities elsewhere, but at this point in his career the native New Yorker might have just wanted to pitch closer to his home.

I don’t expect to see Redding in the Bronx unless Yankee starters both in the majors and minors have a rash of injuries. Zack McAllister is one name off the top of my head who would get called up before him.
