Hitter of the Week :

It’s not often that the overall best player in the game takes home this award.  Usually he’s just consistently good, while someone else can erupt in any given week to take home the award.  This week it’s different, as Albert Pujols is the winner.  On the surface his .296 (8-27) average is nothing special, but that’s the only “average” thing about his week.  He tied for the league lead in home runs with four.  He was one behind the leaders in RBI with nine.  He was among the leaders in runs scored with seven (Rafael Furcal led the league with nine).  And just to add icing on the cake, he stole two bases (the league leaders had three).  It was a great week for the best hitting player in the sport today.

Honorable Mention :

  • Rafael Furcal—Los Angeles Dodgers—.538 (14-26), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 9 R, 1 SB
  • Jim Thome—Minnesota Twins—.400 (8-20), 4 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R, 0 SB
  • Clint Barmes—Colorado Rockies—.400 (12-30), 2 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, 0 SB

Pitcher of the Week :

It was an amazing week for Adam Wainwright, who tossed 15.1 brilliant innings.  Not only did he pick up two wins, but he did so with a minuscule 0.59 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. He was the only starting pitcher to win two games with a sub-1.00 ERA and WHIP (Matt Capps also had two wins, with a 0.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP, but in only three innings). That alone would have been enough, but he also struck out 16, second most for the week (Ricky Nolasco struck out 20).

Honorable Mention :

  • Octavio Dotel—Pittsburgh Pirates—5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.40 WHIP, 5 K, 5 SV
  • Ricky Nolasco—Florida Marlins—14.0 IP, 3.21 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, 20 K, 2 W
  • Felix Hernandez—Seattle Mariners—9.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.56 WHIP, 11 K, 1 W
