Here’s a look at the unheralded players who played well yesterday.

 

Shelley Duncan, Cleveland Indians
Duncan went 4 for 5 with a run and two RBI (19) to raise his average to .281.

 

 

Travis Wood, Cincinnati Reds (pictured)
Wood continued his impressive run, giving up two hits in seven scoreless innings to improve to 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA. He has a 1.91 ERA in his last five starts.

 

 

Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay Rays
Hellickson was impressive in his MLB debut, holding the Twins to two runs on three hits with six Ks in seven innings. While he raised eyebrows with his start, he was sent back down to the minors.

 

 

Alcides Escobar, Milwaukee Brewers
Escobar got into the action as the Brewers pounded the Cubs 19-1. He went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI. He hasn’t quite lived up to his expectations this year.

 

Jeff Keppinger, Houston Astros
Keppinger went 2 for 5 with four RBI (40) to raise his average to .293. He’s 8 for 16 in his last four games with six RBI.

 

 

Jake Westbrook, St. Louis Cardinals

Westbrook was impressive in his Cardinals’ debut, even if he earned a no-decision. He gave up two runs in six innings with seven Ks. He’s a combined 6-7 with a 4.58 ERA on the year.

 

 

Livan Hernandez, Washington Nationals
Livan gave up one run on five hits with five Ks in 7 1/3 innings to improve to 8-7 with a 3.12 ERA. He’s 2-2 in his last four starts with a 2.02 ERA.

Sean Burnett, WAS:  Save, 1 2/3 IP, 0 Runs, 2 Ks (35 Ks, 38 1/3 IP)


Ernesto Frieri, SD:  1 IP, 0 Runs, 3 Ks, (14 Ks, 7 1/3 IP)
