The Oakland Athletics bolstered their bullpen Saturday with the addition of right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica via a trade with the Boston Red Sox.

The Athletics official Twitter account noted that Oakland gave up cash considerations and a player to be named later to acquire Mujica.

The timing is interesting because Boston recently designated Mujica for assignment. He boasts a 1-1 record with a 4.61 ERA in 13.2 innings of work this season, and opponents hit .294 with three home runs against him in that span.

In an ironic twist given his struggles in Boston, his last play as a member of the Red Sox was rather impressive, per Cut4 of the MLB:

While those numbers do not exactly jump off the page, he was a critical piece of the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen during the 2013 season with a 2.78 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. The hope in Oakland is that he taps into that production moving forward this season and provides some help for a struggling group.

Oakland was 29th in the league in bullpen ERA in the early going in 2015 as of Saturday night, and adding an experienced arm who has been in the league since 2006 certainly cannot hurt given the stats.

The Athletics are looking up at every other team in the division, partially because of that bullpen, and needed to make a move heading into the long summer. Mujica has been effective before and could rediscover his stuff with a change of scenery.
