Gordon’s Rep, Marlins Recently Started Discussing Multiyear Deal

Wednesday, Nov. 25

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reported the sides just started talking about a new deal and things are still preliminary in nature. He also passed along comments Gordon made about the situation during an appearance on Wednesday’s Hot Stove on the MLB Network.

“My agent is doing the talking,” he said. “They’re just keeping me in the loop. I think it’s going pretty well right now. We’ll see how that goes. I’m just playing the waiting game. We’re going to do the right thing.”

Gordon is coming off a breakout season that saw him hit a National League-best .333 with 88 runs scored and 58 stolen bases in 145 games. He also added his first career Gold Glove Award for his defense at second base.

At 27, he should just be entering his peak seasons. Making him a stalwart at the top of the order for the duration of his prime is key for Miami, but there probably isn’t a ton of urgency at this point.

That’s because Gordon is still under team control through 2018 with arbitration, per Spotrac. He made just $2.5 million for the 2015 season.

So for the Marlins to buy out his remaining arbitration years, they would probably want a couple of additional seasons tacked on to the deal. In turn, Gordon should receive a massive uptick in salary for the duration of the contract.

All told, it doesn’t sound like an agreement is imminent, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the two sides are able to find common ground before next season gets underway.
