Indians to Place Carrasco on DL

Tuesday, August 25

Chris Assenheimer of the Chronicle-Telegram reported the discouraging news on Carrasco. MLB.com’s August Fagerstrom added Carrasco had a cortisone shot and that he’s only expected to be on the 15-day disabled list.

Manager Terry Francona provided an encouraging update Tuesday before the club decided to shelve its exceptional hurler, per the Associated Press, via ESPN.com:

Sometimes when you give MRIs to pitchers you have to be a little bit careful because anybody throwing a baseball is going to have something wrong with him, but his was very clean and we were thrilled. […] Regardless of whether it’s going to be two days, three days or a couple weeks, he’s going to be fine.

Carrasco has a 2.36 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break. Jordan Bastian of MLB.com highlighted how strong Carrasco’s form has been of late:

Despite the recent roll Carrasco has enjoyed, it’s a wise move for the Indians to shut him down at this juncture, nearing the final stretch of the 2015 campaign seven games below .500.

Cleveland locked up Carrasco to a new four-year contract in April, so he figures to be a pillar to build around for years to come. The combination of Carrasco and Corey Kluber atop the pitching staff gives Indians fans reason for hope in the future, albeit amid what looks to be a losing season.
