It’s time once again to check in on some of the bigger prospects in baseball.  Who’s hot?  Who’s not?  Are any of them on the cusp of getting recalled?  Let’s take a look:

 

Brett Wallace: Toronto Blue Jays —Third Base

Triple-A: .298 (87-292), 13 HR, 41 RBI, 46 R, 0 SB

When Edwin Encarnacion was designated for assignment, one would have thought it was to clear a spot for Wallace.  This clearly was not the case, however.  Wallace remains at Triple-A, at least for now, though he has been scorching hot of late.  He is currently on a six-game hitting streak, going 13-26 with two HR, four RBI and seven R. 

What’s actually amazing is that the last time we checked in on him (June 2), he had hit just 11 HR (in 194 AB), and at that point he had struggled over his last 10 games (zero HR, .239 average).  That’s no longer a problem, and if he continues to hit he’s going to force the Blue Jays’ hands.  Maybe they were waiting for him to catch fire before exposing him to the major leagues.  We shall soon find out, but look for him to reach the majors in the not too distant future. Daniel Hudson: Chicago White Sox —Pitcher

Triple-A: 3.89 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 92 K, 9 W, 76.1 IP

Hudson has made five starts since we last checked in on him, going 4-1 in the process.  Over that span he’s allowed nine ER over 28 IP (2.89 ERA) while striking out 33.  It just continues the roll he was on, as he had struck out 11 over eight shutout innings on May 23 (his last start prior to our update on him).  He is rolling overall with a 2.40 ERA over his last 10 starts. 

The White Sox have are in the thick of the AL Central race, thanks to a nine-game winning streak.  Of course, the pitcher who would be the most logical fit for him to replace, Freddy Garcia, has been equally as good.  He’s won his last five starts and is 8-1 since May 1.  For now Hudson is just going to have to continue to impress and wait for a major league opportunity to present itself. Jesus Montero: New York Yankees —Catcher

Triple-A: .235 (53-226), 4 HR, 25 RBI, 22 R, 0 SB

He’s 20 years old and playing in Triple-A, so does it surprise anyone that he’s struggling with the bat?  Over his last 10 games he’s gone .250 with one HR, three RBI and two R.  With Jorge Posada and Francisco Cervelli catching at the major league level, there’s no reason for the Yankees to call him up anyways.  Maybe in 2011 he will get to make a splash, but for now he should only be considered ownable in keeper formats.
