Whenever there is a conversation about the greatest and most notable names in Major League Baseball history, it won’t take long for someone to bring up Joe DiMaggio.
Though he only played for 13 seasons—all for the New York Yankees—Joe DiMaggio is probably one of the most famous players ever to come through MLB.
It was on this day in 1936 that DiMaggio aka Joltin’ Joe aka The Yankee Clipper took the field for the first time tabbed as the next great Yankee and hitting in the three hole directly in front of Lou Gehrig.
No pressure at all, Joe.
The expectations were astronomical for DiMaggio, but it’s safe to say he handled them well. DiMaggio’s lengthy list of accomplishments include:
-3 AL MVP awards and three other times finishing within the Top Five of the voting
-9 World Series titles
-a record 56-game hitting streak
-bedding Marilyn Monroe
-mentions in both John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” and Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”
And of course, with all the Seinfeld talk that was being thrown around here last week, it wouldn’t be right to mention the Yankee Clipper without watching Kramer’s tales of his epic focus while dunking his donuts…
